Located in the heart of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, La Foux d'Allos is a high-altitude gem that manages to feel both expansive and intimate. It is part of the vast Espace Lumière ski area, connecting it to Pra Loup, and offers a landscape that feels like a sun-drenched playground.

A brief history

La Foux d'Allos' history is one of transition from isolated mountain pastures to a premier alpine destination. For centuries, the Allos Valley was home to shepherds and small farming villages.

The "tourist" era began in the 1930s, but it was not until the 1970s that the resort as we know it - La Foux - was purpose-built at an altitude of 1,800m. Unlike some of the "concrete" resorts of the time, La Foux opted for wooden facades and stone, maintaining a more traditional aesthetic that pays homage to its Provençal roots.

Description: The ultimate getaway

If you’re looking for a winter wonderland, La Foux d’Allos is the place to be. It’s the perfect escape for those who want the thrill of the high peaks without the cold, clinical feel of larger northern resorts.

The atmosphere is distinctly relaxed and family-friendly. Imagine waking up in your chalet, the air fresh and scented with pine, before setting off on a day of sunshine. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just a holidaymaker looking for a leisurely stroll through the village, the resort offers a warm, Mediterranean-inspired hospitality that makes every day feel like a retreat.

Typical foods: A taste of the mountains

The cuisine here is a hearty blend of Alpine tradition and Provençal flavours:

Les Tourtons: Small fried pastries filled with potato, cheese or even jam.

Seillans cheese: Local goat and sheep cheeses, perfect with crusty bread.

L’Agneau de Sisteron: Famous regional lamb, often slow-cooked with mountain herbs.

Génépi: A potent herbal liqueur made from alpine flowers - the traditional way to end a meal.

Tartiflette & Raclette: Although common in the Alps, local versions use cheeses from nearby valley dairies.

La Foux d'Allos is the northern gateway to the Mercantour National Park. The area's "crown jewel" is Lac d'Allos. At 2,228 m, it is the largest natural high-altitude lake in Europe.

The water is a stunning turquoise colour, surrounded by jagged limestone peaks. The area teems with wildlife; you're almost guaranteed to see marmots sunbathing or chamois jumping over the sedges.
